A 100-acre section of the Whaling City Golf Course will be converted into an industrial park and the City of New Bedford plans to operate the course as a nine-hole operation, according to plans announced Thursday that are aimed at providing 1,000 jobs and $2 million annually in new property tax revenues.
According to Mayor Jon Mitchell's office, the New Bedford Business Park is nearly at full capacity and the golf course, which covers 275 acres in total, has been eyed for development due to its size and access to highways, the rail system and the local airport.
MassDevelopment, the state’s economic development agency, is handling the planned addition of 1.3 million square feet of space to the property tax rolls and is awarding New Bedford a $300,000 site readiness grant to engage a planning and engineering team.
"The many conversations I’ve had with residents and small business owners about their property tax burden convinced me that the only way forward was to find new solutions that are bold but also practical," Mitchell said in a statement Thursday. "People want city leaders to be doing everything possible to hold the line on taxes, and that is what drove us to develop this concept for a new industrial park."
Architect Donald Ross designed the original nine-hole course that is being retained under the city's redevelopment plans.
