Baker concerned about health care reform in DC

Governor Charlie Baker said he is "worried and disappointed" about how Congress is handling health care.

President Donald Trump and the Republican-led U.S. House have caused Gov. Charlie Baker some agita with their health care proposals, while Senate President Stanley Rosenberg assigned a failing grade to the new president.

Baker, who has previously made clear his opposition to the House Republicans health care reform plan, said he is "really worried and disappointed about some of the issues around health care."

After meeting with legislative leaders, Baker was asked for his general assessment of Trump's performance as president so far.

"My overall assessment about everything in Washington is: Because of the uncertainty associated with the policy agenda and because of some of the stuff that's been proposed, like the changes to the Affordable Care Act and some really significant cuts to [community development block grant] programs, and the National Institutes of Health and all the rest, there's a tremendous amount of concern here in the Commonwealth, and I share that concern, about what this all means for some of the most important elements – not just our economy, but of things we do that I believe serve the country," said Baker, who declined to give the president a letter grade.

Asked a similarly open-ended question about the president, Senate President Stanley Rosenberg, an Amherst Democrat, gave Trump a worse-than-failing grade.

"Are you serious? F-minus," Rosenberg said. He said, "I'm one of those people that wants to give whoever's elected fair running room to be able to serve in the position that they were elected – after all, he is the president; he was elected by the people. But we wake up every day scratching our heads wondering what happened yesterday and what could possibly happen today."
