Saint Vincent recognized for stroke treatment
Saint Vincent Hospital was recognized for its stroke treatment.
Saint Vincent Hospital has been recognized for its commitment to stroke care by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, the hospital announced Wednesday.
The Worcester hospital received the association’s gold plus quality achievement for stroke treatment, which means that it administered the correct treatment in a timely manner at least 85 percent of the time for two or more consecutive years.
The association bases the awards off of various stroke treatment guidelines. Specifically, to qualify for the honor roll, hospitals have to minimize the time between patient arrival and treatment with the clot-buster tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), which is the only U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved drug to treat ischemic stroke.
If tPA is given in the first three hours after symptoms start, it can significantly reduce the effects of the stroke and lessen the chance of permanent disability, according to Saint Vincent.
