Westborough waste manager installs 1MW solar array

A Westborough waste hauling and recycling business recently installed a 1.1 megawatt solar system on the roof of its single stream sorting facility in order to save money and produce cleaner power.
Last month, SolarFlair Energy, Inc. of Ashland turned on the solar system at E.L. Harvey & Sons, the Westborough waste hauling company, the solar installer said on Tuesday. The system was installed on top of E.L. Harvey’s 80,000 square foot automated processing center, where the latest in screening and optical sorting technology is used to recover 95 percent of recyclables.
The project is the fourth in Westborough for SolarFlair in a year. Together, SolarFlair’s four Westborough installations will produce over 3,750,000 kilowatt-hours of clean energy every year -- enough to power 500 homes. Two of the installations -- on commercial buildings at 53 Otis St. and 57 Brigham St. -- will be owned and operated by SolarFlair. The smallest project was a 94 kilowatt system on the Westborough Tennis and Swim Club.
The solar systems are connected to the utility grid and will convert solar energy for about 25 years, according to SolarFlair.
