The Washington Street bridge in Hudson is closing down for three months so the Massachusetts Department of Transportation can complete a sizeable chunk of the work for the two-year replacement project.

The bridge, which carries Route 85 over the Assabet River in Hudson, will close July 7 and reopen in October, according to a Wednesday announcement from MassDOT.

As part of the $4.5-million project, the existing stone arch bridge will be removed and replaced with a new single span concrete bridge with ornamental light posts. Infrastructure improvements will also be made to the approach roadways. Work started last fall and is expected to be completed by fall 2018.
