Railers games to be broadcast on 98.9 FM

Grant Welker The Railers will begin their inaugural season in October at the DCU Center.

When the Worcester Railers HC hit the ice for the first time in October, area fans won't be cut out of the action if they can't make it to a game. The team has signed a deal with 98.9 FM NASH ICON for the country-music station to broadcast all of its games this season.

Broadcasts of each of the team's 72 regular-season games will include a 30-minute pregame show. The broadcasts, which were announced Thursday, will be available over the air and on www.nashicon989.com and www.railershc.com.

Calling the games will be Eric Lindquist, who will be covering broadcasts for his ninth season in Worcester. He formerly called games for the Worcester Sharks, who moved after the 2015-16 season to be closer to their parent club, the NHL's San Jose Sharks. Lindquist, the team's vice president of communications and marketing, has called more than 900 hockey games.

The Railers' first game is at 7 p.m. on Oct. 14 against the Manchester Monarchs at the DCU Center. Both cities recently had American Hockey League clubs before both teams moved to the West Coast to be closer to their NHL affiliates. The Railers are affiliated with the New York Islanders.

Worcester, like Manchester, now has a team in the ECHL, formerly the East Coast Hockey League and a level below the AHL.
