Ameresco headquarters in Framingham.

Energy efficiency solutions provider Ameresco has entered an agreement with the U.S. Federal Bureau of Prisons the company said will lead to $33 million in energy and water savings.

Through the energy savings performance contract, which is valued at $18.9 million, the Framingham company will upgrade the electrical and mechanical systems at the Administrative United States Penitentiary Thomson in Thomson, Ill., Ameresco said Monday.

The upgrades will affect more than 613,000 square feet of correctional buildings and facilities, reducing their energy consumption by 53 percent.

Specifically, Ameresco will install interior and exterior LED lighting fixtures, heating and cooling system improvements, building automation system control upgrades, new high efficiency transformers, and high efficiency water fixtures. The company will also install 1 megawatt of ground-mount solar photovoltaic arrays to cancel out retail electric consumption and implement several water conservation measures.

The project is expected to reduce AUSP Thomson’s water consumption by more than 32 gallons a year, or by 35 percent.
