Worcester to flip the switch on $27M solar project

A municipally-owned solar array -- the largest in New England -- is scheduled to come online Thursday in Worcester.

The $27-million Greenwood Street Solar Array, formerly the site of the Greenwood Street Landfill, is on a 25-acre site with 28,600 solar panels producing enough electricity to power 1,340 homes per year.

Officials estimate the array to save Worcester $60 million over the array’s expected 30-year life with an anticipated six-year payback on the $27-million investment.

The array is the largest municipally-owned solar array in New England and is expected to power about 20 percent of the city’s electricity needs.

The flip-switching event featuring city and state officials starts at 8:45 a.m. Thursday at 30 NippNapp Road in Worcester.
