Congressman James McGovern and other local leaders will call on Congress and the White House not to cut National Institutes of Health funding paying for critical medical research, in a panel discussion at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester this afternoon.

McGovern and other panelists, including UMMS Chancellor Michael Collins, Worcester Mayor Joseph Petty, and City Manager Edward Augustus, will discuss the disastrous impact cuts to NIH and other medical research funding would have on Worcester and Central Massachusetts, as well as advances in biomedical research, UMMS said in a statement Monday.

According to UMMS, the school receives more than $150 million annually from NIH, and another $50 million from other federal sources. President Donald Trump called for massive cuts in spending on medical and scientific research in his 2018 budget, though Congress has blocked the proposal so far.

The panel will take place at 4 p.m. in the Albert Sherman Center on Lake Avenue.
