Construction has begun on the Collings Foundation’s planned 65,000-square-foot American Heritage Museum in Stow.

Construction firm JM Coull announced the beginning of construction in a press release Monday.

The new museum will be home to exhibits from the country’s past military conflicts, including the country’s largest private collection of military vehicles.

According to land records, the foundation purchased land in neighboring Hudson for the creation of a road into the property for $800,000. The plans have been in the works for several years.

The foundation and Stow Planning Board settled in June after the board’s original denial of the plan was appealed in 2015. Per the agreement, the museum can be built but is subject to several conditions, including one mandating that visitor and commercial access must come from the entrance off of Main Street in Hudson.

Previously, access to the foundation’s campus was from Barton Road in Stow, a heavily-populated road along Lake Boon.
