Natick's Lookout Farm begins making beer

After pouring cider for two years, Natick’s Lookout Farm is now trying its hand at beer.

The 180-acre orchard and farm began pouring beer in its farm taproom last week just in time for the busy apple-picking season.

So far, the farm is brewing four beers in addition to its four cider choices, said Jay Mofenson, founder of the beverage operation at the family-owned farm.

According to Mofenson, the hard cider business has been “extremely profitable” and helps provide financial stability for the entire farm.

“Our interests are more broad,” he said.

With craft beer becoming extremely popular, Mofenson said the farm wanted to tap into the renewed interest in local brewing to help support the farm and keep it running for future generations.

Farming in New England and across the country can be difficult and subject to many conditions, including weather and drought.

“Farms go out of business every day,” Mofenson said. “This farm needs to be financially self-sustaining.”

The farm has about 65,000 fruit trees and grows 2.4 million pounds of fruit each year and, according to Mofenson, is as beautiful as it is productive.

“It’s a gem,” he said. “It’s my responsibility as a family member of this farm to be a steward for the future of the property.”

Currently, the taproom will be open from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday and from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday.
