A Waltham construction company and a Groton architecture firm have been chosen to build a 78,000-square-foot state Department of Transportation building in Worcester.

CTA Construction of Waltham and Helene Karl Architects of Groton will soon begin work on the building which is slated for completion in 2019, according to CTA’s website.

The $35.5 million administration building on 6.5 acres on Plantation Parkway includes four stories with upper and lower parking lots and energy-efficient features throughout the building.

According to the department, UMass Medical School proposed a land swap, giving the department the Plantation Parkway land in exchange for the department’s current office building, which abuts the hospital on Belmont Street. The state says the DOT District 3 building is too small and in need of repair.
