Woman indicted for stealing $30K from nonprofit

A Wayland woman and former treasurer at a Royalston nonprofit has been indicted for stealing $30,000 from the organization.

Vickie Paine, 55, of Wayland, was indicted Friday on charges of larceny and false entry in corporate books.

Paine, the treasurer of South Royalston Improvement Corporation (SRIC) a nonprofit that manages the water supply in southern Royalston, allegedly took SRIC funds for personal use, according to state Attorney General Maura Healey’s office.

The state Inspector General opened a case on Paine in 2014 and in 2016 referred the case to the AG’s office.

Paine, who was responsible for collecting water fees, took approximately $30,000 between 2009 and 2014 by writing checks to cash, which were signed and endorsed by Paine, withdrawing cash from SRIC accounts and transferring money from SRIC accounts into her personal account, according to the state.

Prosecutors allege that corporate records show Paine attempted to disguise the checks written to cash by claiming they were paid to workers while other checks were omitted from the check register altogether.
