Railers bar to open Friday

Grant Welker The Railers Sports Tavern

On the eve of the Worcester Railers’ first regular season game, the city’s newest sports bar themed after the team will open.

The Railers Sports Tavern, named after the city’s newest minor league hockey club, will open at 4 p.m. Friday.

Worcester restaurant group Niche Hospitality Group announced the opening on the restaurant’s website and Facebook. It’s been in the works for months since the Railers -- an affiliate of the NHL’s New York Islanders -- announced they were coming to town.

The team opens its regular season at the DCU Center on Saturday night against the Manchester Monarchs.

It’s the third restaurant the group is opening this year. In a new two-rink hockey facility in the Canal District, the group is opening a casual Italian restaurant, Nonna's, and Steam Cafe.

The restaurant group is also in talks with the developers of the Mercantile Center to bring a new restaurant to the downtown mall.
