Community development group Worcester Common Ground is proposing a $13-million, 31-unit affordable housing rental project at Chandler Avenue the group hopes will help liven up the neighborhood.

According to the organization, the 31 units will be in two buildings at 120-126 Chandler Ave. at the site of a medical supply warehouse.

The warehouse, at 126 Chandler Ave., will be converted into one part of the facility. A two-story office building adjacent to the warehouse will be demolished and a new five-story building will be constructed in its place, said Joel Feinberg, Worcester Common Ground director of real estate development.

Of the 31 units, there will be 10 one-bedroom apartments, 13 two-bedroom apartments and eight three-bedroom apartments, Feinberg told the WBJ Monday.

Two units - a one-bedroom space and two-bedroom space - will be designated as handicapped-accessible

The apartments will be marketed to tenants making no more than 60 percent of the area's median income, Feinberg said.

Some commercial office space is proposed for the ground floor of the new proposed building, Feinberg said.

The development abuts Chandler Elementary School, so Worcester Common Ground sees the project as a family-oriented development, Feinberg said.

"We look upon it as one more step in trying to build the neighborhood," he said.

The project is scheduled to go before the Worcester Zoning Board of Appeals next month for variances and a special permit mostly related to parking.
