Seven Saws plans Holden brewpub

Courtesy Seven Saws Brewing plans to open a brewpub in Holden sometime next year.

There is yet another brewery coming to Central Massachusetts in the coming months, this one in Holden.

Seven Saws Brewing, currently located in a building on Main Street in Holden, is hoping to open a brewpub in early 2018, brewer and co-founder Tom Anderson told the WBJ Wednesday.

So far, the team of five friends is only distributing the beer to local restaurant Specialty Sandwich Company on Main Street, but the plan is to nail down a space in the near future and build a brewery.

The brewery’s name, according to Anderson, pays homage to Holden’s manufacturing history and foundation. The town was home to more than a dozen mills in the late 1700s, including seven saw mills.

“I love the idea of - not only the history - but where we came from and trying to incorporate that back into the community,” he said.

The group of friends began to explore the possibility of brewing their own beer after waiting in the long lines at renowned breweries Tree House Brewing Company and Trillium Brewing Company.

“We could do this,” Anderson remembers the group thinking. “Let’s try to brew beer.”

The group eventually brought on Holden resident Troy Milliken, who had some home brewing experience and is the only founder with brewing experience prior to last fall when the venture was launched, Anderson said.

Currently, Seven Saws is brewing with just one barrel, but the demand for the beer at the local restaurant has exploded, and soon the brewery will need more production capabilities, Anderson said.

The brewery plans to capitalize on the New England-style IPA craze, but also “expand horizons” and brew pilsners, witbiers, saisons and other IPA styles.

Anderson said he eyes the brewery a kind of community center for the sleepy town of Holden that will be tailor-made for the town.

“That’s our ultimate goal - for the people to Holden to have a local pub and a place to hang out and relax,” he said.
