Boston private foundation Barr Foundation gave $500,000 to the Greater Worcester Community Foundation to help create a new an arts initiative for organizations in Worcester.

The donation from the Barr Foundation, which was announced Tuesday, adds to existing arts-community funding from the Greater Worcester Community Foundation, which granted more than $2 million last year.

The Greater Worcester Community Foundation is one of five Massachusetts organizations to each receive $500,000 from the Barr Foundation. Combined, the $2.5 million in funding is creating a program called Creative Commonwealth, which aims to help the arts communities in cities across the state.

The funding is meant to help organizations deepen engagement, strengthen capacity and provide leadership, the Barr Foundation said. It will also help organizations experiment with new ways of engaging and giving voice to Worcester's diverse communities, the foundation said.

The Barr Foundation says it has contributed more than $837 million to charitable causes since its founding 20 years ago, much of it to arts, cultural and educational initiatives.
