Millbury, Fitchburg recycling companies land $450K in state grants

Nearly $1 million in recycling grants has been awarded to six companies -- including two in Central Massachusetts -- to enable better processing of food, wood and plastics.

The grants, from Gov. Charlie Baker’s office under the state’s Recycling Business Development Grant program, will go to Charles George Cos. location in Fitchburg and United Material Management of Millbury.

Charles George, awarded up to $200,000, will use the funds to help purchase a five-bin sorting line to increase the facility’s ability to separate wood, plastics and other recyclables.

The line would enable the facility to recycle an additional 26,000 tons annually, including more than 10,000 tons of wood and 600 tons of bulky plastics.

United Material Management of Millbury is awarded up to $250,000 to help fund the purchase of new equipment for a new facility, including split bins, wood conveyors, a vibratory screener, a wood-picking line and a wood fines vibratory screener.

The new equipment would allow the facility to separate up to 29,000 tons of wood per year.
