Outdoor adventure park coming to Berlin

Courtesy An outdoor adventure park like this one in Purchase, N.Y., is slated to open in Berlin around Memorial Day.

One of the first outdoor adventure parks in Central Massachusetts is on track to open by around Memorial Day in Berlin.

The park, called Boundless Adventures, will feature about seven acres of ropes courses and zip lines high up in the trees. There will be seven courses, each typically taking 30 minutes to an hour to complete, said Lorrie Funtleyder, who co-owns Boundless Adventures with her husband, Brian.

The complex will be part of the Riverbridge development just about a mile from the Solomon Pond Mall on the Berlin-Marlborough line. Riverbridge already includes a preschool and is slated to include a 109-room Homewood Suites hotel, which is under construction, and 205 residential units in a later phase.

The Funtleyders run a Boundless Adventures park in Purchase, N.Y. and plan to open other locations in the future.

"There are just so many positive aspects," Lorrie Funtleyder said of Boundless Adventures and such outdoor parks, which she said are far more common in Europe but newer to the United States.

Outdoor adventure parks are more common as part of some larger ski resorts in Vermont or New Hampshire for use during the summer off-season, but not so much locally. A few of the nearest such parks are in Canton and near the University of Connecticut campus in Storrs.

Boundless Adventures will charge $55 for a three-hour ticket for those 12 and older, and $49 for those ages 7 to 11. There will also be discounted group rates for 15 or more.

One of the most popular features is the "Leap of Faith," Funtleyder said. A visitor will jump to the ground from 30 to 40 feet up. The name comes from the fact that it's not a free fall. A harness system slowly lowers the jumper to the ground.
