Hudson’s Medusa Brewing Company is looking to build a 10,000-square-foot production brewery and tasting room just feet away from its current brewery and taproom on Main Street.

The two-story brick building is to be located on a vacant lot at 1 Houghton St. that was once home to a shoe factory that was demolished in 1999.

The site is bordered by the Danforth Brook, South Street and a small restaurant on Main Street.

The building’s features will blend in with other nearby downtown properties and will resemble old factories, according to plans.

Must of the western facade will be a glass curtain wall, allowing the public to watch the brewing process.

The main entrance and outdoor patio area is proposed to be along the southern end of the building along South Street extension, and loading ramps are proposed along Houghton Street.

A wooden deck with over 70 seats is proposed along the western facade facing the Danforth Brook, according to plans.

A brewery representative couldn’t be reached for comment, but Hudson’s Planning Director Jack Hudson said the brewery intends to remain in their current Main Street facility as well.

The Planning Board signed off on the project on Tuesday.

The plans did not detail what Medusa would be investing in the project, but town in a MassWorks grant last August said the brewery would be spending $5.5-million to build the facility, but that document listed the building as 15,000 square feet.

Medusa Brewing Co. opened its taproom in March 2015 and had 30-percent growth each year and has seen more than 30,000 visitors, according to the town’s grant application.

"Medusa has been a major contributor to the renaissance now being experienced in Downtown Hudson and has been not only recognized as a destination to anyone in the immediate area but has been acknowledged internationally as one of the finest breweries in the world," the town said.
