Worcester Walgreens among locations involved in $5.5M drug overcharging

Walgreens has agreed to pay a $5.5-million fine for overcharging for prescription drugs at its pharmacies, including one in Worcester.

Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey's office announced the settlement Wednesday, saying the office found Walgreens overcharged workers for various legitimate prescriptions over a period from 2008 to 2017. The drugs involved in the case were covered by the state's workers' compensation insurance system.

Healey's office said Walgreens pharmacies in Boston, New Bedford, Springfield, Worcester and other unspecified locations were the offenders.

The announcement of the fine did not specify which or how many Walgreens locations were involved. Walgreens has three Worcester locations: 320 Park Ave., 472 Lincoln St. and 937 W. Boylston St.

The settlement did not name the types of prescriptions for which its workers were overcharged, but Healey's office said 89 percent of prescriptions paid for under the workers' compensation system in Massachusetts are for pain medications. Of those, 73 percent are opioids.
