Seven Central Massachusetts companies have been awarded more than $600,000 in state workforce training grants, including an ice cream shop in Hudson.

New City Microcreamery in bustling downtown Hudson, and speakeasy-style bar and restaurant Less Than Greater Than (which is attached to the ice cream shop), have landed $36,400 to train 18 workers and add three jobs by 2020.

The two businesses are owned and operated largely by the same team at Rail Trail Flatbread Co. just across Main Street, where the restaurant utilizes open-book management to help foster employee buy-in.

The restaurant’s financials are opened to every employee from the manager to the dishwasher. If a goal is hit, each employee shares a portion of the restaurant’s profits.

Now, the management style will expand across the street and join the group’s other two establishments.

In a press release from the state office of Labor and Workforce Development, co-owner Jason Kleinerman said the grant provides yet another opportunity to increase the financial and business skills of each employee.

“We are confident it will result in increased profits and more opportunity for our employees,” he said. “It will also help to grow the impact we are making on our community and the lives of our employees.”

Other employers landing their share of the nearly $7 million handed out from the state include:

  • Micorp, Auburn: $80,000 to train 68 workers by 2020
  • Holographix, Marlborough: $36,400 to train 14 workers and create five additional jobs by 2020
  • Kaz USA, Marlborough: $190,050 to train 65 workers and create eight additional jobs by 2020
  • Spectro Coating Corp., Leominster: $185,750 to train 71 workers and create three more jobs by 2020
  • Saliga Machine Company, Hudson: $34,200 to train five workers and add four employees by 2020
  • BMP Medical, Gardner: $89,600 to train 48 workers and add three jobs by 2020
