Harrington opens first Conn. behavioral health facility

Southbridge-based Harrington Hospital has opened a new outpatient behavioral health office in Putnam, Conn., the organization’s first location outside of Massachusetts.
The facility will offer lifespan behavioral health services, counseling and medical management for children, adolescents and adults.
“This is something we have been talking about for a few years,” Harrington President and CEO Ed Moore told the crowd. “We wanted to be sure we were able to identify a service the community needs, and we feel this is a critical need for the Connecticut market.”
The office -- about a 12-minute drive from Harrington’s Webster location -- opened for patients this week.
Harrington first announced plans to enter the Connecticut market primarily served by Putnam-based Day Kimball Healthcare last fall. Day Kimball and Harrington overlap somewhat, each servicing towns on the border of Connecticut and Massachusetts, but until now, neither system has had a brick-and-mortar site in each other's territory.
Clinical staff includes child and adolescent psychiatrist Lowell Kallen, who spent the last three years with Day Kimball.
The Putnam location is part of a larger expansion of Harrington's behavioral health services over the last two years. Harrington opened its 16-bed inpatient mental health and substance abuse treatment facility in Webster in January.
