The Alzheimer's Association will host a conference on dementia at an event May 23 at the DCU Center in Worcester.

The event will be open to dementia care professionals who work in various settings and will include a special focus on new care standards from the Massachusetts Alzheimer’s and Related Dementias Acute Care Advisory Committee, a state board that issued new guidelines last year. Among the top recommendations was that hospitals should have a plan in place, available to the public and state Department of Public Health upon request, to identify dementia in their emergency department and create a specialized care plan in the event dementia is detected.

Breakout sessions are scheduled on 30 different care topics.

The conference, called A Map Through the Maze, is in its 25th year. It said it moved to the DCU Center this year to meet increased demand from dementia care professionals. The Alzheimer's Association is expecting a crowd of more than 800 people.

The event will feature a talk by Melanie Bunn, a gerontological nurse practitioner and a consulting associate at the Duke University School of Nursing.
