Sanofi lays off 95 Framingham workers

French drugmaker Sanofi is laying off 95 employees from its Framingham location.
According to Bo Piela, head of communications at the subsidiary, the company is investing more than $300 million in new facilities and improved technology to transform the locations’ operations to prepare to produce new medicines.
“This transformation at our Framingham sites will streamline our operations, and we are adjusting staffing levels at the site accordingly,” Piela said.
Affected employees will receive severance benefits and outplacement assistance.
“We are fully committed to the city of Framingham, which has been an important center for our research and manufacturing activity for nearly 30 years. Massachusetts will remain a critical global hub for Sanofi for years to come,” he said.
The layoffs come as the company is planning a nearly 15,000-square-foot, two-story expansion of its existing 101,000-square-foot plant on New York Avenue.
According to planning documents, the project will add $15 million in value to the property.
The company laid off 130 Boston-based employees in February, and about 1,800 employees remain in Framingham.
There are about 5,000 Sanofi employees working in Massachusetts, Piela said.
Genzyme was acquired by Sanofi in 2011 for about $20 billion.
