Worcester lawyer and longtime chairman at The Hanover Insurance Group Michael Angelini is retiring from that company’s board of directors, the insurance firm announced Tuesday.

The retirement, effective immediately, comes after Angelini’s 30 years of service to the company and its affiliates. According to The Hanover, the company’s governance guidelines prohibit directors from serving beyond the age of 75.

Angelini, now 75, joined the board in 1996 and served as its first chairman from 2002 to 2017. He was succeeded last year by current chairman Kevin Condron, chairman of the New Hampshire supplier Granite Group.

The current chairman of Worcester-based law firm Bowditch & Dewey, Angelini also served time as a member of The Hanover’s audit, compensation, nominating and corporate governance committees.

“It has been a great privilege to serve as a leader of this exceptional institution,” Angelini said in a statement. “I deeply appreciate having had the opportunity to work with so many talented professionals to advance The Hanover’s mission and to have participated in the progress of what is now a world-class organization.”

The company should continue to thrive while building on its unique business model, he said.

“The Hanover reflects the very best attributes of a modern business enterprise: a passionate commitment to the financial reward of its shareholders and distinguished attention to the interests of its employees, agents, customers, and communities,” Angelini said.

In a statement, The Hanover credited Angelini with helping the company evolve from a small regional property and casualty insurer to a national company with clients around the globe.

In a statement, President and CEO John Roche thanked Angelini for his dedication to the company.

“Mike has served our company with great distinction,” Roche said. “He has made an exceptional contribution over his more than 30 years on our board, providing great vision, leadership, insight and business acumen."
