Devens energy company AMSC is participating in an energy efficiency pilot program with a Wisconsin firm to improve the optimization of the Iowa distribution grid.

AMSC’s D-VAR VVO system was commissioned Tuesday as part of Wisconsin-based Alliant Energy Corp.'s voltage optimization and energy efficiency pilot program.

The project is meant to better utilize resources for energy utilities experiencing rapid growth of renewable energy and electric vehicle charging capacity within their respective networks. Utility companies are now being forced to enhance the capabilities of distribution grids to accommodate those new resources and customers, while maintaining efficiency and superior power quality.

The D-VAR VVO system reacts to rapid load changes due to electric vehicles to minimize the impact on electrical equipment and customers, according to AMSC.
