Little Leaf Farms plans third expansion

Devens-based Little Leaf Farms has doubled the size of its hydroponic greenhouse, and the baby greens producer is planning another expansion to again double the size of the facility.

The expansion officially opened Tuesday brings the greenhouse to five acres from the previous 2.5 acres, the company said in an announcement.

According to land records, the company earlier this month purchased 12 acres of land off of Walker Road in Shirley for about $642,000.

The next expansion project, which will bring the total acreage of the greenhouse to a whopping 10 acres, will begin in 2019.

On Twitter, Little Leaf Farms posted a photo of the sprawling greenhouse, in which lettuce is already grown.

Little Leaf Farms, which opened in Devens in 2016, grows fresh baby greens delivered to more than 1,000 New England grocery stores and restaurants.

The facility grows lettuce and arugula purely through automation. Each of 30,000 trays where the greens are grown are filled by machine with a mineral product that substitutes for soil. All water that's used is from rainwater collected on-site.
