CCC: cannabis industry needs more test labs

State regulators on Tuesday formally asked the Cannabis Control Commission staff to prioritize the review of license applications for independent testing laboratories, a critical link of the supply chain without which no retail shops can open.
So far, the CCC has not received any completed license applications from independent testing labs, though one lab has begun its application with the CCC. The marijuana law the Legislature approved about a year ago requires that all adult-use marijuana and marijuana products be tested by an independent lab before it is sold to the public.
The CCC voted unanimously Tuesday to allow its staff to review for approval any completed independent testing lab application submitted by Aug. 1 out of order, "purely for the purposes of being able to get the independent testing labs to the front of the queue so that we can start to establish a supply chain that is consistent with the statute," Commissioner Britte McBride said.
The CCC had targeted July 1 as the beginning of legal retail sales, but so far the commission has only approved one license: for a cultivation facility in Milford. The CCC will not consider additional licenses until July 2, Chairman Steven Hoffman said Tuesday
But without a licensed independent testing lab, any retail shops the CCC might license could not sell marijuana for non-medical use. CCC Executive Director Shawn Collins confirmed Tuesday that the CCC cannot waive the requirement that all marijuana be tested before being sold.
