UMass Medical School is expecting to host more than 350 people from the medical field and academics for a conference Thursday and Friday on RNA, or ribonucleic acid, a critical molecule in gene studies.

The RNA Therapeutics Conference will include keynote speeches from Gary Ruvkun, a genetics professor at Harvard Medical School who runs a lab that studies micro RNA genes, and Victor Ambros, a UMass Medical School professor of natural sciences who is the principal investigator at the school's Ambros Labs, which studies micro RNAs in animal development.

Roughly 20 speakers and panelists are expected to participate, including Craig Mello, a UMass Medical School researcher whose work in the field won him a Nobel Prize in 2006. Others include speakers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Yale University and industry firms including Avidity Biosciences and Moderna Therapeutics.

The panel moderator will be James Velema, a patent attorney at the Boston offices of the law firm Lathrop Gage.
