Leicester dispensary slated for state's first retail pot license

Cultivate in Leicester could be the first company to be awarded a retail license.
A Leicester medical marijuana shop could be the first to be awarded a retail license from the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission.
Cultivate, which currently operates a medical dispensary on Main Street in Leicester, is on the CCC’s agenda for Monday, at which the state’s cannabis regulators are expected to vote on a retail license for the company.
CEO Sam Barber said he was notified Thursday morning.
“We’re very excited,” he said Thursday afternoon. “I wasn’t expecting that call this morning.”
Still, though, the company will have to wait to open its doors for recreational marijuana customers, as the program rollout is delayed until testing facilities can be licensed and a seed-to-sale tracking program can be implemented.
Adult-use cannabis sales from Cultivate likely won’t happen until later in July, Barber said.
Cultivate is still waiting to hear back on its cultivation and production licenses, but could transfer some medical products to the adult-use space once state regulators advise companies of those logistics.
“We’re ready on our end,” Barber said, adding the company has already set up its recreational sales area and some products have already been packaged. “Hopefully we get word from the state and things keep moving along quickly.”
Also slated for review are licenses for Milford-based Sira Naturals, which is seeking transportation and product manufacturing licenses.
Last week, Sira Naturals was awarded the first-ever marijuana business license on the East Coast after the CCC approved an adult-use cultivation license for the company’s Milford facility.
