Framingham renewable energy company Ameresco has signed on to a $150-million energy modernization project in Hawaii, it announced Wednesday.

The joint venture with Australian developer Lendlease will install new energy infrastructure for more than 5,800 military homes at a development called Island Palm Communities that Lendlease manages. The two companies formed a joint venture in 2015 called Energy Solutions and Security LLC, with the Hawaii project the first for the joint venture to focus on energy security at such a large-sized residential community.

Installations will include new efficient HVAC systems, weatherization and insulation, water-use conservation and efficient street lighting improvements. A 6.1-megawatt rooftop solar system will also be installed throughout the community.

Constructed is slated to start in September and be complete by August 2021.

Island Palm Communities is a partnership between Lendlease and the U.S. Army, and is the Army's largest private residential development, according to Ameresco's announcement of the program.
