Marlborough medical imaging device company Hologic has received approval in Europe for its Panther Fusion MRSA screening system.

The system is designed to detect genetically distinct bacteria resistant to treatment and the cause of human infections difficult to treat. It is known as the MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) super bug. Hologics' system allows for healthcare providers to differentiate between strains of bacteria using samples from patients' noses.

“With rising antibiotic resistance in Europe and the threat posed by healthcare-associated infections to public health, our new assay will help customers provide a rapid service to hospitals, so cases of resistance, such as MRSA, are identified and managed quickly and effectively,” said Vice President of Diagnostics João Malagueira in a press release.

The Panther Fusion system can accommodate testing for women’s health, virology, respiratory, and hospital-acquired infections, running up to 32 different tests at the same time.

For MRSA testing, the system can deliver results in less than three hours, a time Hologic says is considerably faster than other commonly-used tests.
