Worcester Polytechnic Institute President Laurie Leshin has been named to a National Science Foundation advisory panel to encourage scientific and technological innovation in education.

Leshin was one of 18 members whose appointment was announced Wednesday. The list included others from academia, scientific organizations and institutions including the Museum of Science in Boston.

The National Science Foundation's STEM Advisory Board is being chaired by Gabriela Gonzalez, the deputy director of Intel Corp.'s Intel Foundation. David Evans, executive director of the National Science Teachers Association, will serve as vice chair.

Two other Massachusetts representatives made the board: Arthur Eisenkraft, the director of UMass Boston's Center of Science and Math in Context, and Ioannis Miaoulis, the president and director of the Museum of Science in Boston.

Leshin, WPI's president since 2014, also serves on the board of directors of the Association of American Colleges & Universities, a 1,400-member organization of accredited colleges and universities.
