Assumption College has created a new center for study named after late U.S. Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan.

The Daniel Patrick Moynihan Center for Scholarship and Statesmanship, which Assumption announced Tuesday, was created through funding from the Thomas W. Smith Foundation and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. The Hewlett Foundation's Madison Initiative focuses on strengthening the values, norms and institutions of democracy in America, particularly in Congress.

The institute will be located in Assumption's Department of Political Science. The college said it will host a biannual gathering of undergraduate Moynihan Fellows in Washington to discuss the late Senator's writings and to meet prominent political thinkers.

Moynihan, who died in 2003, earned a doctorate from Tufts University. He worked for the Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Ford administrations before a long career in the Senate.

The center's director will be Greg Weiner, a political science professor at Assumption who has written extensively on Congress, the presidency, separation of powers and interpretation of the Constitution.
