Beals and Thomas eyes bigger Boston presence with new Downtown Crossing office

Southborough engineering firm Beals and Thomas has opened a third office, this one in Boston to help support three massive Boston-area projects.

The office, near Downtown Crossing, will support three of the firm’s key projects, including the 5.2 million-square-foot mixed use development Cambridge Crossing, the 161-acre mixed use Suffolk Downs project and the redevelopment of the Harvard Square Theatre.

The company will continue to operate its headquarters out of Southborough and a regional office in Plymouth.

In a statement, President Gerry Preble said the building activity in and around Boston is too hot to not take part.

“We can better accommodate both our clients and staff working on local projects, and the prime location gives us more visibility for future opportunities,” Preble said. “We have become more involved in the community."

Coinciding with the opening of the new office, the company has hired a manager of urban development services, Jeff Heidelberg. He’ll be responsible for managing resources, project teams and schedules on complex land use projects in the Boston area.
