The SHINE Initiative, a Worcester agency raising awareness of mental health conditions, has named a new executive director.

Fred Kaelin will take over in mid-September and will replace Paul Richard, who is retiring at the end of the year, the group announced Monday.

The SHINE Initiative was founded by Leominster's Fidelity Bank in 2004 with a goal of reducing the stigma of mental health conditions and discrimination against those who suffer from them.

Kaelin most recently served as the chief development officer at the Worcester behavioral health and education agency YOU, Inc., and has nearly a decade of executive director experience from his role at Dynamy, a Worcester internship program. Richard has been the SHINE Initiative's executive director since 2011 and a member of its advisory board since its inception.

“We are extremely pleased with this leadership transition,” Fidelity Bank Chairman and CEO Edward Manzi said in a statement. “Paul will retire as a beloved leader. We couldn’t have had a more able leader for the past seven years. Fred’s vision, experience and accomplishments are an ideal fit for The SHINE Initiative going forward.”
