Southborough lab might get recreational marijuana sales started

A Southborough medical marijuana testing facility is now one of three such locations to apply for a state license to test adult-use cannabis products.

EVIO Inc., a publicly-traded Oregon-based company, said Tuesday its Massachusetts lab in Southborough submitted its application to the Cannabis Control Commission.

That makes the company one of three labs to have started the licensing process, said EVIO Chief Operating Officer Lori Glauser.

"We are preparing for the rapidly increased demand for testing services as the commonwealth's adult-use cannabis market is expected to exceed $1 billion by 2021,” she said in a statement.

In May, Glauser told WBJ the Southborough lab employed five, but the headcount could triple by the end of the year as the state’s adult use cannabis market ramps up.

The company’s announcement comes on the heels of the company receiving accreditation from the American Association for Laboratory Accreditation last week,, which is a mandatory piece of the adult-use cannabis testing puzzle in Massachusetts.

Regulators set July 1 as the anticipated roll out of the state's cannabis program, but testing facilities need to be licensed and operational to test products before they can be sold.

On July 26, the Cannabis Control Commission said three testing labs have submitted license applications, but only one was under review. The Commission meets again on Thursday.
