Worcester courthouse redevelopment wins $800K tax credit

A long-awaited redevelopment of the former Worcester County Courthouse in Lincoln Square will be helped by an $800,000 state historical tax credit.
The Massachusetts Historical Commission told Boston developer Trinity Financial in a letter July 26 the project has been chosen for funding. Trinity is eligible to apply for further funds that, in all, could total up to 20 percent of the project cost.
The $53-million project is slated to include 114 apartment units and retail space in a nearly 250,000-square-foot building that's been vacant at a key intersection of the city for a decade. Both the old courthouse building along Main Street, which was built in 1843, and a more modern addition at the rear of the site that was added in 1954 will be renovated.
Trinity bought the 4.3-acre property from the city last year for $1.3 million.
Trinity initially planned to start construction this fall, but now hopes to do so in early 2019, pending securing additional funding.
