Former Sturbridge restaurant owner sentenced for tax evasion

The former owner of a Sturbridge pizzeria and bar will face 200 hours of community service and a two-year suspended jail sentence for avoiding more than $114,000 in state and local meals tax payments.

Theodore Metaxas, 53, of Southbridge, pleaded guilty Friday to willful failure to account and pay over tax and willful delivery of a false tax return. He was sentenced by Suffolk Superior Court judge William Sullivan.

According to the state Attorney General’s office, which prosecuted the case, Metaxas managed and owned Enrico’s Brick Oven Pizzeria and only reported credit card sales to the state Department of Revenue from 2011 to 2014.

His cash sales -- which accounted for about 40 percent of the restaurant's sales -- went completely unreported during that time.

Metaxas was indicted in January 2018 following an investigation by the AG’s office.
