Marlborough medical device firm Hologic has made a play bolster its breast-conserving surgery portfolio with a $125-million acquisition.

Hologic announced Wednesday its purchase of California-based breast health firm Focal Therapeutics for the cash offer. The transaction is centered around Focal’s BioZorb marker, an implantable 3D marker that helps doctors mark the tumor excision site for monitoring and future treatments.

The device, which has 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, allows tissue in-growth during the healing process, Hologic said in its announcement.

The transaction comes about two months after Hologic made another play in the breast health market, acquiring Faxitron Bioptics and that company’s broad portfolio of breast surgery products for $85 million.

According to Hologic, Focal Therapeutics had $16 million in revenue in the last 12 months.

The transaction is expected to close in early October.
