Boston-area wage growth slows

Wages and salaries for Boston area workers rose more slowly over the past year than for their counterparts nationally, according to new federal data.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Wednesday that wages and salaries rose 2 percent from September 2017 to September 2018, while wages and salaries nationwide increased 3.1 percent over that same period.

Wages and salaries increased 2.8 percent in the Boston area from September 2016 to September of 2017.

The bureau said wage and salary growth in the 15 metropolitan areas it tracks ranged from 4.7 percent in Minneapolis to the 2 percent low in Boston and Houston. Wages and salaries rose 2.8 percent in the New York area and 2.9 percent in the Philadelphia area, the bureau said.
