Mass. gas prices down 5 cents

Courtesy | State House News Service Gas prices in Massachusetts could drop once oil refineries come back online.

Gas prices in Massachusetts dropped five cents this week to $2.74 per gallon of regular unleaded, the largest one-week drop since February, according to auto club AAA Northeast

Despite the drop, the state’s fuel prices are still six cents higher than the national average of regular unleaded gas at $2.68.

A year ago, the average price of gas in the state was $2.53.

In a press release, Director of Public and Legislative Affairs Mary Maguire said prices could plunge even lower once oil refiners fully restart units from the fall maintenance season.

“Also driving down pump prices is the fact that crude oil is selling under $65 per barrel – a rare sight this year,” she said.
