A $125,000 grant for NewVue Communities will help the Fitchburg community nonprofit renovate 27 apartments in the city into affordable housing units.

The grant from the TD Charitable Foundation to NewVue was one of 25 given across the country by TD Bank's philanthropy arm to help with affordable housing efforts. Lawrence Community Works in Lawrence and Caritas Communities in Braintree were among the others. The funding, totaling more than $3.1 million, was given through a competitive process.

For Fitchburg, the funds will help NewVue Communities, formerly the Twin Cities Community Development Corp., restore and rehabilitate 27 apartments in Fitchburg's Cleghorn neighborhood.

Housing units with affordability restrictions make up nearly 9 percent of Fitchburg's roughly 17,000 housing units, according to the state Department of Housing and Community Development.
