Marlborough autism center acquired by Mich. company

Applied Behavioral Associates, located in downtown Marlborough, has a new owner after its founder, Barbara Natoli, decided to retire.

Applied Behavioral Associates, a Marlborough clinical and home-based autism services provider, has been acquired by a national company based in Michigan.

Centria Healthcare, the buyer, announced the acquisition Wednesday. The deal was effective Dec. 1, it said.

The deal comes after Applied Behavioral Associates Founder Barbara Natoli, the agency's executive director, announced her retirement earlier this year. Natoli said she had to choose between closing the business, which she opened in 1988, or finding anther company to continue providing services. That led to talks with Centria.

Centria now has only one center in the Northeast, in New Jersey, and otherwise mostly has locations in the West. In Marlborough, the company said, it plans to build a new program adjacent to its downtown offices. The Applied Behavioral Associates name will stay, with the center to be known as a Centria Healthcare company.
