Temescal awarded Hudson, Pittsfield marijuana licenses

By this time next year, Worcester cannabis product manufacturer and grower Temescal Wellness will double its Massachusetts headcount to about 150 as it begins recreational marijuana sales.

The company hopes to begin selling adult-use cannabis products at dispensaries in Hudson, Framingham and Pittsfield next year. Two of those locations are on the right track, as the Cannabis Control Commission approved final licenses for the Hudson and Pittsfield dispensaries Thursday.

CEO and Founder Ted Rebholz said the company chose those locations and not more densely-populated ones because of the lack of options in those communities.

“We want to go wherever there is demand,” he said.

The Hudson and Pittsfield locations are expected to be open and selling cannabis products from the company’s 18,000-square-foot Worcester cultivation center early next year. The Framingham location, Rebholz said, is getting a late start because the city just recently lifted a moratorium and outlined its local approvals process for the industry.

That Worcester facility has been up and running for medical marijuana patients since June, and it’s been a busy place.

The facility began with 67 different strains, but some may be weeded out as the company will instead focus on more potent and healthy strains, Rebholz said.

“It’s been a beehive of activity there,” he said.

There are about two dozen full-time employees at the Worcester facility. With two stores champing at the bit to tap into a lucrative adult-use market, the company has begun ramping up hiring to accommodate the impending demand.

Cultivate, based in Leicester, knows what that demand is like very well. The store was one of two to open last month for recreational sales. Now, the same company is planning another store in Framingham.

Temescal’s Framingham store, however, is on Cochicuate Road in Framingham just off the Mass Pike in a lot with ample parking, Rebholz said.

The dispensary is located in a building formerly occupied by a vegan restaurant called the Green Leaf, which has since relocated.

“Thankfully, since we were so early to the game, we were able to get prime real estate to minimize the potential negative traffic impacts,” he said

Currently, Temescal Wellness operates nine different locations, including one production facility each in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maryland.

In addition to three dispensaries in Massachusetts, Temescal operates one each for medical marijuana in Maryland and New Hampshire.
