The major annual fundraiser by the UMass Memorial Medical Center and UMass Medical School brought in a record $2 million this year.

The early-December Winter Ball event raised money through corporate sponsorships, auctions and ticket sales. This year's take was considerably larger than the $1.4 million raised last year or the roughly $1 million in 2016.

Since the Winter Ball began in 2009, the event has brought in more than $9.4 million total. This year's corporate sponsorship revenue of more than $850,000 was an all-time high for the event.

Funds go toward care, education and research, as well as a new program or initiative each year. This year, the beneficiary was the Cochlear Implant Program, which helps patients suffering from severe hearing loss or deafness.

This year's event drew more than 400 patrons to Worcester's Mechanics Hall.
