The Cannabis Control Commission is hoping to move into its permanent headquarters at Union Station in Worcester by mid-2019 after authorizing its executive director to formalize a 10-year lease with the city.

The CCC is planning to move into a 14,381-square-foot office at the downtown train station at a first-year cost of $439,200, Executive Director Shawn Collins said Monday morning. The Worcester Redevelopment Authority, which owns Union Station, voted unanimously Friday to authorize the lease, Collins said.

The space includes 25 offices, 53 work stations and three conference rooms, one of which is large enough to accommodate the commission's public meetings, Collins said. The commission will get 15 parking spots in the garage attached to Union Station and its office will be accessible by the commuter rail.

CCC officials touted the central location of the agency's new headquarters and the accessibility to public transportation. The agency is hoping that basing itself in Worcester will make it accessible to people all around the state and will be a more convenient base of operations for the CCC inspectors who regularly travel to various marijuana businesses.

Collins said the Worcester space will be ready for the CCC in about 40 weeks, though he said the estimate was a conservative one, and he said the commission has reached out to its current landlord at 101 Federal St. in Boston to discuss the possibility of extending the current lease, which expires in May.

On Thursday, the CCC authorized Collins to execute a lease for a satellite office at 50 Franklin St. in Boston's Downtown Crossing. CCC officials said the space is 4,532 square feet at a cost of roughly $54 per square foot. It will be ready for the CCC to move into in the late spring or summer, after some construction work to configure the space to the CCC's needs.
