Mass. jobless rate at lowest point since May 2003
The unemployment rate in Massachusetts ticked down one-tenth of a percentage point in November to 3.4 percent as the state added an estimated 4,600 jobs, the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development said Friday.
At 3.4 percent, the state's unemployment rate is at its lowest point since May 2003, the state said, and it is three-tenths of a point lower than the national unemployment rate of 3.7 percent.
Massachusetts added 60,500 jobs between November 2017 and November 2018, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
"In addition to the Commonwealth's consistently low unemployment rate, which has held under 4% for 31 consecutive months, Massachusetts has added over 57,000 jobs since the beginning of the year, with the largest share of those gains coming from Professional, Business, and Scientific Services and other key sectors," Labor and Workforce Development Secretary Rosalin Acosta said in a statement.
The state's labor force participation rate -- which counts the number of residents 16 years or older who worked or were unemployed but actively sought work in the last four weeks -- was unchanged from October at 68 percent but is up 2.7 percent on the year.
EOLWD said its estimates show 3,707,800 Massachusetts residents were employed and 130,000 were unemployed, for a total labor force of 3,837,000 in November, up 4,200 from October.
The sectors that gained jobs last month included trade, transportation, and utilities; professional, scientific, and business services; education and health services; and information. Financial activities, construction, other services, and manufacturing lost jobs during November.
