WRA to discuss Union Station leases for nanobrewery, arcade bar

The Worcester Redevelopment Authority on Friday will discuss two leases for a nanobrewery and arcade bar for vacant retail space in Union Station.

The agenda item comes after the Cannabis Control Commission said it has agreed to a 10-year lease in Worcester’s transportation hub. The state’s marijuana regulating agency will move to a 14,381-square-foot space in mid-2019.

Now, two other businesses want to open in vacant retail space in the ground floor of the station’s garage.

Greater Good Imperial Brewing Co. wants to move its nanobrewery side project Soul Purpose to a 2,000-square-foot space, and The Quarters -- an arcade bar based in Hadley -- wants to open in a 6,000-square-foot space.

The space was even among the first that Greater Good ever considered when it looked into moving to Worcester from Williamsburg in 2017. Eventually, Greater Good settled on its current Millbrook Street facility, but the company has sent a letter to the city with plans to find a permanent home for a line of lighter beers called Soul Purpose.

The retail space in question has been vacant since the garage was built in 2008.

The WRA, owners of Union Station, is also expected to discuss a report from real estate firm Kelleher & Sadowsky on a redevelopment strategy for Union Station, which lists a boutique hotel among its top suggestions for the stations’ use.
